The Beginning of a Career in Tires….
Freda Pratt-Boyer began her career at Purcell Tires in May of 1972. Her first job in the tires business was as a computer input clerk. Freda has worked in retail, commercial, retread plants and wholesale distribution centers in managerial positions. She is now senior auditor for Purcell Tire and Rubber Company. Purcell is No. 14 on the Modern Tire Dealer 100 with 67 retail, commercial and combination commercial-retail locations, four retread plants and two wholesale outlets.
The Tire Industry Association (TIA) and the Missouri Tire Industry Association
Freda’s first experience serving the Tire Industry Association (TIA) was as a panelist in a session about women in the tire industry at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show several years ago. She was elected to the TIA board in 2008 and became board secretary in 2012.
In 2013, TIA announced that their board of directors secretary, Freda Pratt-Boyer, was awarded the "President's Cup" Award at the annual Purcell Tire & Rubber Co. Manager’s Conference.
In addition to serving on the TIA board, Freda was the vice-president of the Missouri Tire Industry Association (MTIA).
In 2014, Freda became the second woman President of TIA. As President, Freda was always a true professional who found time to listen and help anyone in the industry who reached out to her. She was a strong and consistent leader with a passion for family, friends, and the independent dealers and retreaders who make up our great industry. Freda’s term as TIA’s President involved extensive travel, both domestically and internationally.
Congress and National Summits
Freda led a successful dealer march on Congress to stop excessive industry taxes. She spoke at state association conventions from coast to coast. She met with a dozen tire manufacturers, urging them to speak on industry issues in one voice; and raising money for the TIA Education Foundation. She hosted an Earthmover Tire Service (ETS) Summit, represented the retail segment of our industry in a speech at the Clemson Tire Conference, represented TIA at the BiPaver meeting (an industry association representing retreaders in 32 European countries) that was meeting in conjunction with the Autopromatic Show that was taking place in Bologna, Italy.
Before the meeting in Italy was over, she invited them to come to GTE in Las Vegas and present a symposium on retreader issues around the world—and subsequently invited association leaders from Asia, Central America, and South America who all came and for the first time ever, offered a snap shot of the industry and it’s challenges around the globe.
Women in the Tire Industry
During Freda’s tenure as President, TIA hosted the first-ever Certified Automotive Tire Service (ATS) Advanced Instructor Training Course for women only. Freda also published a special article on “Women to Watch in the Industry” and partnered an education session at GTE/SEMA for women in business. “One of my goals as President of TIA was to showcase the opportunities that are available to women in our industry," said Freda. "Currently, only a very small percentage of TIA-certified ATS technicians are female and through this course, we hoped to increase those numbers. Course participants also had an opportunity to network with other women in the industry."
The Future and Beyond…
It is obvious that family is her greatest love and nothing in her life compares to the pride she has in the growth and achievements of her children, her daughter Christine Carlson and her husband David, her son David Boyer and his wife Michelle, and her beautiful granddaughters Madelyn and Mallory. We hope Freda will continue to be active in the tire industry with her wealth of knowledge, support, and professionalism for many years to come.
